RSport Rally’s Bob Trinder and son Adam Trinder took the teams new car out for their first rally at last weekends Doo-Wop rally 1 held on Saturday and the Doo-Wop rally 2 held on the Sunday the events took place just West of Olympia, Washington. This year’s rally drew an impressive entry with over 37 cars.
On day one the team ran into some problems with the car, as it felt underpowered, and would not produce much boost. After 3 stages they found the problem which has plagued the car from its inaugural run with Scott Trinder at the Pacific Forest Rally – Once again the catalytic converter had disintegrated and rotated 90 degrees and clogged the exhaust system. “We now have designed a quick release system that will allow us to exchange the catalytic converters during a rally without any time loss.” Says Scott. As the cars develop over 19 pounds of boost the rich mixture at idle or low rev's seems to dramatically shorten the life of the unit.
Day 1, Saturday: “Today was always going to be a learning day and that’s exactly what happened. The car didn't feel anywhere near as fast as I was expecting, and we were somewhat disappointed until on the third stage it became apparent that we had a major boost problem that was found to be caused by an exhaust blockage. Once we completed the repairs to the exhaust we promptly went out and got a 3rd fastest time on stage 4! The Subi' had turned into a rocket ship. On stage 5 we had a small moment entering into one of the artificial chicanes and spun, fortunately avoiding the chicane and the penalties associated with hitting them. We completed the day 6th in class,” Says Bob.
Day 2 Event 2 Sunday: Sunday’s event was dry and sunny and with our problems behind us we went out to play!!. The first stage on Tarmac showed the cars true potential with a second fastest time, beating the rally leaders and only a second off Patterson’s winning time. Adam and many onlookers couldn't believe the cars acceleration off the line! The remainder of the day was more of the same, I still drove well within my limits (Scott had made it very clear he expected to do Calgary in it next weekend) but still made many top 5 times. The car still has lots to come, wait till we have the brakes and centre diff sorted!!
Driving on the right side is like going home again, even if I did flatten the mirror on Adams side almost every stage !!!
4th overall and only 5 seconds off 3rd was a great result for us, there's lots of life in this old dog yet, and the event was as fabulous as ever, fierce competition but none of the tensions usually associated with championship rounds. Ray did it again!!
