RSport Rally driver Scott Trinder and navigator Bill Westhead won the Mountain Trials Rally overall and in class this October 18, 03. The event was based out of Merritt BC and drew an extremely competitive and fast group of competitors.
Trinder and Westhead set their event objectives over a week prior to the event. The plan was not to compete for a podium and to maintain RSport Rally/Trinder’s position in the Western P4 Canadian Rally Championship.
This plan almost was not to be when just 11 kilometres into a 20 kilometre stage the car lost drive in 2nd gear. “We were going through a series of left/right/lefts back to back in second gear and the car went zingggg. It sounded like it just popped out of gear. But when I went to put it back into gear there was no drive. I was able to get it into 3rd and nursed it back to service” says Scott.
Total Autosport’s main crew chief at the event Cody was able to get the transmission to select all gears except 2nd (which was now in the drain pan) during the 20 min service break. Trinder and Westhead were back of into the 20k stage, this time run in reverse up hill! “Scott did a great job maintainng the momentum in 3rd gear and was able to get us through to the finish” says Bill. “The toughest part for me was the 30k transit bask to the finish hoping that the transmission would not completely pack-in,” says Scott.
RSport Rally driver Bob Trinder and navigator Andy White were having an exciting rally setting some very impressive stage times. Bob Tinder was nipping at the heals of his son Scott on one 20 kilometre stage where he finished just 3 seconds slower. His drive however was not to be… Making an older 2 wheel drive car set top times requires total commitment and the pair were caught out over a crest right and found themselves of the road unable to continue. “I was amazed at the times he was setting in that car, It must have been a fun ride for Andy,” says Scott. “He (Bob Trinder) was not going too fast. We simply drifted slightly off the correct line over a crest right and ran out of road where there was unfortunately a large pile of rocks,” said Andy
RSport Rally’s Scott Trinder is now: leading the P4 class in the Western Canadian Rally Championship; Second overall in the Western Canadian Rally Championship; First in class in the North American Rally Championship; Second in points in the Canadian P4 National Rally Championship.
The next event for RSport Rally is the Kananaskis Rally held in Calgary this November 9th.
